Civics, Citizenship and Political Literacy Working Group (27/11/24)

On Wednesday the 27th of November, the Civics, Citizenship and Political Literacy Working Group will convene at the University of Canterbury. The agenda will feature a discussion panel specifically addressing political engagement and concepts of citizenship for Māori and Pacific young people and the future of civics education in Aotearoa New Zealand. There will be opportunities to discuss relevant research, network with peers, and collectively chart the future direction of the Working Group. We encourage postgraduate students to attend and support any intersection of interests with other network groups.

For catering purposes, please contact Helena Cook (helena.cook@canterbury.ac.nz) if you are planning to attend. If you have recent research you would like to present or discussion items for the agenda, please do also let Helena know.

Aotearoa New Zealand Politics Network (29/11/24)

The Aotearoa New Zealand Politics network will convene at the University of Canterbury on Friday the 29th of November. The network meeting schedule will include presentations of recent research in the area of New Zealand politics and a kōrero regarding teaching within the discipline.

For catering purposes, please advise Luke Oldfield (luke.oldfield@vuw.ac.nz) if you are planning to attend. Please also let Luke know if you would like to present some of your recent research. No abstract is required, just email a title of the research to Luke so that he can include it in the schedule.

We would like this to be a PhD student-friendly event. Please let students under your supervision know that there will be a panel specifically for emerging researchers to present their work.

Environmental Politics and Policy Network (29/11/24)

Sustainability, Justice and Transformation: The local and global politics of the environment

Around the time the New Zealand Political Studies Association was inaugurated in Christchurch, debates over “sustainability” and “sustainable development” had just begun. Fifty years later, as the planet warms, sea levels rise, pollution increases, and six out of nine planetary boundaries have been transgressed, the need for large-scale societal transformation – rather than anything resembling “business-as-usual” – is more apparent than ever. Moreover, critical perspectives on sustainability – including feminist, non-Western and indigenous – are increasingly important.

As part of the NZPSA 50th anniversary celebrations, the Environmental Politics and Policy Network (EPPN) is holding a workshop on Friday the 29th of November that connects with these themes. We warmly invite all scholars interested in these topics to join us, including staff and students.

The workshop will consist of two sessions. The first will provide researchers with an opportunity to present their current or planned research projects on environmental politics and policy. In the second session, we will discuss ideas and themes for a special issue to be published in a peer-reviewed academic journal. We will also seek expressions of interest for contributions to this special issue.

The workshop will be held over Zoom, although there will be facilities available for people attending in person in Christchurch.

The EPPN invites submissions of abstracts from anyone interested in presenting research relating to the broad themes of sustainability, environmental justice, and environmental politics and policy.

Please email the title and abstract of your talk to Karen Hytten (k.hytten@massey.ac.nz) by 31st October 2024. If you would like to attend the workshop, please RSVP by emailing Sam Crawley (sam.crawley@vuw.ac.nz), and indicate whether you will attend in person or on Zoom.

International Relations Network (29/11/24)

International Relations in Aotearoa New Zealand: surveying the state of the field

Call for papers: Register by contacting irnetwork.nzpsa@gmail.com

Abstract: What is the shape of International Relations (IR) scholarship in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2024? This workshop will be just the second organised by the IR Network of the New Zealand Political Studies Association. As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the NZPSA, this workshop brings together established and emerging scholars and students of IR to reflect on the unique perspectives and contributions of our subfield in Aotearoa New Zealand. The theme, "Surveying the State of the Field," reflects our examination of the past, present, and future of IR scholarship and key issues from a New Zealand perspective. All IR research presentations from Network members are welcome. A significant aspect of this event is continuing to build the International Relations Network, aimed at fostering a supportive network of IR scholars in New Zealand. This workshop provides an opportunity for community-building, facilitating connections, and promoting collaboration among faculty and postgraduate students in our field. 2024 is a crucial time for International Relations scholarship. We confront ongoing conflict, intensifying geopolitical contestation, major global elections, and a host of other pressing global issues. The Workshop will be an opportune moment to reflect on the IR subdiscipline in New Zealand, and to look forward to future directions for our scholarship.

Financial support: The workshop will be catered, but there is unfortunately no support for travel or accommodation.
