Gendered patterns of environmental activism: The role of individual concern and contextual salience
|
We investigate how gender relates to distinct types of environmental activism across countries. We find that women are more likely than men to sign petitions on environmental issues, and as likely to participate in other forms of environmental activism. Although women express greater environmental concern than men, this concern does not impact gender patterns in activism. However, the gender gap in participation (women engaging more than men) widens the more salient environmental issues are within a country.
