Call for Papers: Women and Politics: Looking back, looking forward
Paper submissions for Women Talking Politics 2025 are now open!

This call for papers builds on the excellent work of the previous editions of Women Talking Politics, particularly the 2018 edition that looked to the historical parliament of the recent election for women’s political leadership. Celebrating 2024 as the 50th Anniversary of the NZPSA, our themes for this edition in 2025 encourage both looking back at the past 50 years, and looking forward to an inclusive and diverse Aotearoa. We are particularly interested in papers on what being cis women, trans women, and non-binary persons researching politics, participating in politics, and constructing politics has meant and will mean.

But within and without those themes we also will consider all pieces written by women, trans- and non-binary persons who are working with a gender lens. To help we have outlined some additional areas we would welcome work on, as a form of inspiration. If your work falls outside these criteria, still send it to us!

We welcome commentary, original research papers, published articles, dissertation reports, research abstracts, poems, graphic designs, projects, stories within the following word limits:
|
- Original research papers: 2,000-5,000 words
- Commentary: 500-2,500 words
- Summary of published articles: 800 words
- Reports of dissertations: No more than 2,000 words
- Research abstracts: 200-300 words
- Creative work (plays, poems, pictures, or stories): up to 5,000 words

Women Talking Politics is a network promoting communication among cis women, trans women, and non-binary persons working on political issues, their research and events across Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond producing an annual online research publication. It is designed to showcase the work of scholars, activists, community workers, policy writers, poets, and creatives who are working on gendered issues related to national and international politics, Māori and indigenous politics, political theory, public policy, political communication and other related disciplines. It includes cis women, trans women, and non-binary persons teaching, researching or actively engaged in women’s issues and politics more broadly. We would particularly welcome contributions from undergraduate students and marginalized communities. Women Talking Politics has been an important source of articles, news and discussion about political thought and action written by women since 1987. This work is by us, for us, and we would love you to join us.
